Assessing Notability and Sources Before Creating a Company Wikipedia Article

Assess independent reliable coverage before deciding to draft, wait or improve public documentation; Wikipedia is not a corporate profile.

A Wikipedia article is not a promotional asset a company can purchase. Before drafting, assess whether the subject has substantial coverage in multiple independent, reliable secondary sources. Corporate websites, press releases, advertising, social accounts and pages that merely repeat releases generally do not establish notability on their own. Even strong sourcing does not guarantee retention.

Build a source audit table

For every source, record publication, author, date, URL, independence, secondary analysis, depth, supported facts and indications of paid or syndicated content. Classify sources as strong, supplementary or unsuitable for establishing notability. If central claims rely only on self-published material, narrow the proposed scope or wait.

Manage conflict of interest

Employees, agencies and paid editors have a conflict of interest and should follow applicable disclosure requirements rather than inserting marketing copy directly. A safer process is to prepare a neutral draft, disclose the relationship and request independent review through the appropriate draft or discussion process. No one can responsibly guarantee creation, retention or ranking.

How to draft neutrally

  • Write only claims directly supported by sources and place citations precisely
  • Organize history, operations and significant events by encyclopedic relevance—not website navigation
  • Remove promotional adjectives such as leading, top or innovative unless objectively necessary and sourced
  • Represent controversy proportionately to reliable coverage rather than selectively omitting it
  • Verify image copyright and licensing; corporate possession does not imply permission to upload

A pre-creation decision gate

If strong sources lack quantity or depth, the correct decision is to wait and continue doing genuinely newsworthy work—not purchase low-quality coverage to manufacture sources. If sourcing is sufficient, complete fact checks, COI disclosure, citation review and duplicate-title search before submitting a draft.

Do many media links automatically establish notability?

No. Independence, reliability and substantial coverage matter more than link count. Syndications of one press release are not normally multiple independent pieces of evidence.
