Reddit is not a conventional distribution channel; it is a network of communities with distinct rules, cultures and moderators. Brands should place understanding and contribution before click acquisition. Reddit’s rules require authentic participation and compliance with community rules, while spam or content manipulation can lead to removals or account restrictions.
Week 1: Research without promotion
Select 10–20 subreddits tied to the problem, user roles and use cases. Community size is secondary; record 90-day activity, recurring questions, link rules, sentiment around brands, moderator requirements and traits of high-quality answers. Build a table of allowed, disclosure-required and prohibited actions.
Week 2: Establish identity and response rules
Decide whether to use a brand account or a verifiable employee account and disclose the relationship in the profile or relevant replies. Set non-negotiables: no pretending to be a customer, vote buying, coordinated reviews, duplicated comments or unsolicited messaging. Assign escalation owners for product defects, refunds, safety and sensitive topics.
Week 3: Earn a contribution history
Start with questions that do not require mentioning the brand. Provide steps, limitations, alternatives and verifiable sources. Add a link only when it directly helps and the community permits it, with relationship disclosure where relevant. Internal review should ask whether the answer solves the question, not whether it includes the brand name.
Week 4: Run a small measured experiment
- Choose one or two communities where rules allow and the account has a contribution history
- Offer research, a tool, a methodological debrief or an AMA, contacting moderators first where appropriate
- Record comment quality, saves, organic discussion, referral visits and product feedback
- Route negative feedback into factual error, product issue, experience issue or abuse
- Decide whether to continue, adjust or stop; removing criticism is not a success metric
Can brands use AI to draft Reddit replies?
AI can assist with organization, but a human must verify facts, adapt to community context and take responsibility. Mass, repetitive or misleading automated content risks becoming spam and damaging trust.
