Different numbers in GA4, Google Ads and an MMP do not automatically mean that one platform is wrong. They use different collection methods, attribution windows, identity rules and deduplication. The real risk is asking one metric to answer every business question.
Assign each system a decision role
Google Ads helps optimise media delivery and conversion signals. GA4 explains behaviour across a website or web funnel. An MMP handles mobile-app installs, activation, in-app events and channel attribution. They should cross-check one another, not be forced into identical totals.
Create an event dictionary
For every important event, document its name, trigger condition, location, parameters, deduplication, owner and business meaning. A form submission should fire after the backend accepts it, not when someone clicks a button. A qualified lead needs a sales rule; an activated user needs a product rule.
Reconcile through a shared identity
Where lawful and appropriate, connect leads and orders to a reusable identifier. Ads can show a conversion, CRM can show whether a conversation became qualified and GA4 can show the preceding path. Without that connection, reports remain platform-level impressions.
Align time and attribution windows
Every report should state timezone, click or view attribution, window length and whether modelled data is included. The same conversion may be credited by click date in an ad platform and by close date in CRM. Make definitions transparent before debating differences.
A weekly reconciliation habit
Take a small sample of real leads and trace ad click, landing page, form and CRM status. Repair the specific broken step rather than reinstalling all tags because an aggregate total differs.
End with business outcome
Installs, forms and clicks are process metrics. Budget decisions should move toward qualified leads, activation, retention, sales cycle and margin contribution. WEPR defines that outcome layer before configuring media or app events.
Why do GA4, Google Ads and MMP report different numbers?
They use different identifiers, windows, event handling and models. Align event definitions, time zones, windows and deduplication before calling the gap an error.
Which platform should be the source of truth?
Choose by decision: ad platforms optimise delivery, MMPs support app attribution, GA4 supports site/cross-channel analysis, and business outcomes should reconcile with backend or CRM data.
Do installs make activation measurement unnecessary?
No. Installs do not prove meaningful use. Track activation, retention, revenue or another business-relevant event.
