Clicks and Sessions but No Leads: A Practical Tracking Checklist

First distinguish no leads from unrecorded leads. This checklist traces the path from URL parameters and events to forms and CRM.

Clicks in an ad platform and sessions in GA4 do not prove that CRM should already contain leads. Before changing budget, verify that people reached the intended page, could complete the form and were recorded correctly.

1. Did a click become a valid landing-page visit?

Check final URLs, UTM parameters, redirects and page status. Clicks can be duplicated, accidental or sent to a page that fails to load. Sample by device, geography and browser rather than testing only on one desktop.

2. Is the session attributed correctly?

Use a consistent UTM convention and ensure parameters survive internal navigation. If booking, payment or a third-party form crosses domains, configure cross-domain measurement or exclude self-referrals deliberately.

3. Did the form actually write a record?

Test required fields, mobile input, confirmation, email notification and backend storage. A frontend success message without a stored lead is a technical priority. Protect against spam without blocking real users.

4. Did the event fire at the right moment?

Button click, form start and successful submission are different events. Counting button clicks as leads inflates reports. Recording only completed leads hides where people abandon. Instrumentation should support diagnosis, not maximise event volume.

5. Are alternative contacts missing?

Buyers may email, use WeChat, click WhatsApp or contact a sales person directly. If those routes do not enter a shared lead record, the team may conclude there were no conversions. Give non-form routes a source field and an owner for manual capture.

6. Assess traffic quality last

Once the path is sound, compare query, ad copy, geography, device and landing page. High-click, low-intent traffic often comes from broad terms or a promise that the page does not fulfil. Adding more form fields rarely fixes it; it usually reduces completion by qualified buyers too.
