For many B2B growth teams, the biggest problem is not a lack of channels. It is this:
They do a little of everything without making any one channel work.
If I rank common B2B acquisition channels by buying intent, conversion efficiency, compounding potential and sales alignment, I would divide them into four tiers.
S tier: Highest-priority investments
1. AI search
More B2B buyers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI search questions such as:
“Which tools are best for an XX team?” “Is A or B a better fit for an enterprise?” “What alternatives are there to XX software?”
The defining characteristic of this traffic is:
The user is already researching and making decisions.
B2B brands therefore need to look beyond traditional SEO and consider:
Whether AI mentions, cites, compares and recommends their brand.
2. SEO, especially BOFU keywords
The most valuable B2B SEO queries are not necessarily the highest-volume ones. They are often closer to a buying decision.
For example:
- XX Alternative
- XX vs XX
- Best XX Software
- XX Pricing
- XX Reviews
- XX for Enterprise
These queries may have less volume, but usually indicate stronger buying intent.
Compared with informational queries such as “What is CRM?”, bottom-of-funnel content sits closer to revenue.
3. Intent-based outbound
Cold email can work.
What is inefficient is:
Sending bulk messages to people with no relevant need.
A better approach starts with intent signals.
For example:
Pricing-page visits, competitor searches, relevant hiring, recent funding, team expansion or use of a competing product.
Targeted outbound informed by these signals usually converts much better than a completely cold approach.
4. Customer referrals
For high-value B2B businesses, referrals remain a powerful channel.
The reason is simple:
Trust is often a bigger conversion barrier than price.
Ten statements from an unfamiliar salesperson may carry less weight than a customer saying:
“We have used it for six months, and it works well.”
Referrals should therefore be designed into the growth system rather than left to chance.
A tier: Strong channels that depend on accumulated credibility
1. Founder-led content
B2B buyers evaluate more than the product. They also ask:
Can we trust this company?
Founder-led content is particularly effective for early-stage companies.
LinkedIn, X, YouTube and newsletters can all support consistent founder distribution.
The founder should share more than product announcements:
Industry perspectives, customer problems, cases, methods and thinking behind the scenes.
The result is category awareness and expert trust.
2. Warm outbound
People with an existing connection deserve priority over completely cold prospects.
For example:
People who have seen your content, attended an event, downloaded a resource, followed your account or share a mutual contact.
The objective is not simply to sell. It is:
Helping someone with an existing weak connection take the next step.
3. Small, high-quality events
B2B does not always require conferences with thousands of attendees.
Often:
A private session with 20 relevant prospects is worth more than a broad event with 2,000 attendees.
Roundtables, dinners, workshops and industry meetups all help reduce the cost of building trust.
They are particularly relevant to high-ACV businesses with long sales cycles.
4. Ecosystem partners
Integrations, agencies, advisers, industry providers and SaaS partners can all create growth leverage.
A mature partnership essentially means:
Working through established customer relationships and distribution networks.
B tier: Effective, but usually insufficient as the entire growth engine
B2B creators
Specialist creators offer one major advantage:
Concentrated trust.
They can educate a market about a product or category and influence decision participants.
However, scaling is difficult, and results depend heavily on overlap with the ideal customer profile.
Paid search
Google Ads remains a direct way to capture existing demand.
It is especially relevant to:
Products with a clear category, identifiable keywords and commercial intent.
The challenge is:
More mature competition usually means higher CPCs.
Without sufficient lifetime value, acquiring that traffic can become unaffordable.
Retargeting
Advertising can reach people again after they visit the website, view pricing or download content.
This traffic is often considerably higher quality than cold traffic.
But there is a prerequisite:
You need a sufficient audience in the first place.
Retargeting is therefore an amplifier, not the original traffic source.
Webinars
Webinars are suitable for:
Complex products, professional services and enterprise software.
Many B2B products cannot be explained through a single advertising image.
However, broad industry presentations are becoming less effective.
What works is:
Solving one highly specific problem.
C tier: Not useless, but harder to attribute
PR
PR's biggest contribution is often not a direct lead.
Instead, it provides:
Brand credibility, third-party validation, search visibility and potential AI citation signals.
Do not assess PR solely by the number of sales leads generated.
Paid social
Platforms such as LinkedIn and Meta can target relevant audiences.
The biggest B2B challenge is:
The person may not be ready to buy.
These channels are therefore better suited to:
Brand education, demand generation and retargeting.
Rather than an exclusive focus on immediate sales.
Podcasts
Podcasting is a typical slow-building channel.
Short-term ROI is difficult to see.
Done well over time, it can build deep industry trust.
It is therefore better approached as:
A brand asset rather than a short-term acquisition tactic.
One final, important distinction
This tier list does not mean:
S tier is always best and C tier is always worst.
The right priorities depend on:
Deal size, sales cycle, ideal customer profile, category maturity and brand stage.
For an early-stage B2B SaaS company, I would suggest:
First make this combination work:
BOFU SEO, AI search, intent-based outbound and founder content.
Then gradually add:
Paid search, partners, creators and PR.
The biggest danger in B2B growth is not having too few channels.
It is:
Running ten channels at once without developing any of them deeply enough.
FAQs and practical limitations
Is the tier list a universal performance ranking?
No. It is a strategic opinion, not a causal ranking from a shared dataset. The 20-versus-2,000 example is not a validated benchmark. Reprioritise using your audience, category, deal economics, sales cycle, evidence and team capacity rather than assigning budgets from the tiers alone.
Are all AI-search users ready to buy?
No. AI queries may support learning, research or work without purchase intent. Separate question types, citation context and landing-page behaviour. Mentions, citations, recommendations, visits and enquiries are distinct outcomes.
Can AI search replace SEO?
That does not follow. Google states that foundational SEO practices remain relevant to its AI search features, without extra special technical markup. Assess other platforms separately. Access, accurate facts, credible sources and suitability should serve a coherent audience rather than duplicate page sets.
Does BOFU content have to be a comparison or ranking?
No. Pricing, deployment, migration, integrations, security, scope and procurement questions may also support decisions. Map pages to intent rather than creating one per keyword. Comparisons need fair criteria, sources, limitations and disclosure—not invented tests or disparagement.
Does an intent signal give permission to contact someone?
No. Funding or hiring is company context, not an individual’s marketing permission. Pricing visits may be anonymous or aggregated and do not reveal a person’s search history. Validate provenance, permissions, accuracy and local rules; avoid unverified contact lists.
What safeguards apply to cold and warm B2B outreach?
Prior engagement or a download is not permission for every later campaign. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, recipient and channel. Identify the sender, explain relevance, provide opt-out and honour suppression lists; establish an appropriate basis for personal-data use. US commercial-email rules do not automatically exempt B2B messages. Obtain compliance review for the actual campaign.
Why is conversion rate insufficient for retargeting?
People may already be closer to buying, so higher conversion does not prove the ads caused all outcomes. Check consent, platform rules, eligible audiences, frequency, overlap and incrementality. Do not use unauthorised tracking to build a list.
How should PR, founder content and events be measured?
Define whether the role is discovery, education, trust or sales progression. Track relevant participation, content use, brand queries, verified citations, conversations and opportunity changes, cross-checking self-reported discovery and CRM. An assisted touch is not independently created revenue, and opportunities must not be counted repeatedly.
How should a small team choose and scale its first channels?
Identify one main bottleneck and choose a primary acquisition path with necessary trust and conversion support. Do not assume all four suggested channels must launch together. Assign an owner, period and cost cap, then assess qualified opportunities, wins, contribution margin, payback and delivery capacity before scaling.
